Module 3: Attitude
Learn how courtesy, patience, and awareness influence safe and responsible driving.
Courtesy, Patience & Safe Mind-Set
A positive driving attitude is just as important as technical skill. Drivers are expected to:
- Show courtesy to other road users, especially in busy or stressful situations
- Stay patient when traffic is slow or others make mistakes
- Avoid aggressive behaviours such as tailgating or unnecessary honking
- Remain calm and focused, even when feeling pressured
A considerate attitude reduces collisions and promotes safer roads for everyone.
Dealing with Vulnerable Road Users
Vulnerable road users require extra care due to their increased risk of injury. These include:
- Pedestrians, especially children and older people
- Cyclists and motorcyclists
- Horse riders
- People using mobility scooters or wheelchairs
Give them more space, reduce speed, and anticipate unpredictable behaviour.
Handling Aggressive Drivers
Aggressive drivers can create dangerous situations. To stay safe:
- Avoid retaliating — stay calm and do not escalate
- Increase the gap between you and the aggressive driver
- Allow them to overtake if they are driving too closely
- Do not engage or make eye contact
Your priority is to prevent confrontation and maintain safety for yourself and others.
Following Distances & Lane Discipline
Good lane positioning and safe following distances reduce risk significantly:
- Keep a minimum two-second gap from the vehicle ahead (four seconds in the rain)
- Stay in the left lane of motorways unless overtaking
- Avoid unnecessary lane changes
- Use mirrors frequently to maintain awareness
Proper discipline helps traffic flow smoothly and prevents sudden braking or collisions.
