Module 14: Essential Documents
Understand what documents you must carry and maintain as a responsible driver.
Driving Licence Requirements
You must hold a valid driving licence for the category of vehicle you are operating. Key points include:
- Keep it up-to-date with your current address and personal details
- Renew it before expiry — penalties apply for driving with an invalid licence
- Carry it whenever driving; failure to produce it on request can result in fines
Insurance
Insurance is mandatory for all motor vehicles used on public roads. Important points:
- Ensure your policy covers the type of driving you intend (personal, business, learner)
- Driving without valid insurance can result in fines, penalty points, and vehicle seizure
- Keep proof of insurance with you while driving
MOT & Vehicle Tax
To drive legally, your vehicle must meet statutory requirements:
- MOT: Annual test for vehicles over 3 years old to check roadworthiness
- Vehicle Tax: Must be valid and paid; failure can result in fines
- Keep documentation or electronic records available for inspection
Penalties & Endorsements
Breaking driving or documentation rules can lead to endorsements or penalties:
- Fixed penalties for minor offences (speeding, documentation issues)
- Endorsements stay on your licence for a period (usually 4–11 years depending on offence)
- Serious offences may result in disqualification or prosecution
When You Must Produce Documents
You may be asked to show your documents in the following circumstances:
- During a police stop for a routine check or after an accident
- When renewing insurance, road tax, or MOT
- At certain weigh stations or checkpoints
- Failure to produce documents when required can result in fines or vehicle seizure
