Why Motorway Skills Matter

Motorways are statistically the safest roads, but only when drivers plan ahead, use lanes correctly, and stay alert to changing signals.

DVSA Essentials

  • National speed limit is 70 mph unless signs show otherwise—always adjust for weather and traffic.
  • Use the left lane unless overtaking; keep middle and right lanes for passing only.
  • Hard shoulders are for emergencies; on smart motorways, follow the overhead signs for lane status.

Joining and Leaving

  • Use the slip road to match motorway speed, checking mirrors and blind spots before merging.
  • Signal early when leaving and move into the left lane in good time—do not cross solid lines.
  • If you miss your exit, continue to the next junction; never stop or reverse.

Lane Discipline and Overtaking

Plan overtakes early, checking mirrors and blind spots, signalling, and moving smoothly into the next lane. Pass with a safe gap and return to the left lane as soon as it’s clear. Avoid undertaking unless traffic is moving in queues.

Smart Motorway Rules

  • Obey red ‘X’ lane closures—driving in a closed lane is illegal and dangerous.
  • Variable speed limits manage flow; stick to the displayed limit even if lanes look clear.
  • Use emergency refuge areas if you break down and contact National Highways via the SOS phone.

Practice Tips

Tip

Virtual practice

Watch DVSA motorway driving videos. Pause to explain why drivers chose certain lanes or adjusted speed.

Theo’s Advice

Theo’s slip-road drill

On dual carriageways, practise accelerating briskly up the slip road, checking mirrors twice before merging. The habit transfers directly to motorways.

Tip

Signal audit

Keep a note of every time you used or missed a signal when changing lanes. Review weekly to tighten your routine.
