Module 13: Motorway Driving
Understand safe practices, lane discipline, and motorway rules to drive confidently and safely.
Joining & Exiting
Entering and leaving a motorway safely requires careful observation and timing:
- Use the slip road to match the speed of traffic before merging
- Signal early and check mirrors and blind spots
- Give way to vehicles already on the motorway
- Plan your exit well in advance to avoid last-minute lane changes
Smart Motorways
Smart motorways use variable speed limits and lane management to control traffic flow. Key points:
- Observe overhead signs indicating open/closed lanes and speed limits
- Do not use the hard shoulder unless indicated as a live lane
- Maintain the posted variable speed limits
- Keep alert for lane closures or incidents ahead
Lane Discipline
Correct lane use ensures safety and smooth traffic flow:
- Keep left unless overtaking
- Use middle or right lanes only to overtake slower vehicles
- Do not weave between lanes unnecessarily
- Return to the left lane when safe after overtaking
Breakdown Procedure
In case of a breakdown, follow these steps to ensure your safety:
- Exit the motorway if possible; otherwise, move to the hard shoulder
- Switch on hazard lights immediately
- Call for roadside assistance and remain in the vehicle if safe
- Use an emergency roadside telephone if you cannot reach your phone
Speed Limits & Variable Signs
Speed limits on motorways may vary based on conditions. Always pay attention to:
- National speed limits (70 mph for cars unless otherwise indicated)
- Variable speed limits on smart motorways
- Reduced limits near roadworks or congestion
- Temporary speed signs displayed on gantries or roadside boards
