Module 8: Road & Traffic Signs

Learn to recognise and understand road signs, traffic signals, markings, and lane controls.

Sign Categories

Road signs are divided into several categories, each with a clear purpose:

  • Warning signs: Alert drivers to hazards ahead (triangular, red border)
  • Information signs: Provide general guidance, facilities, or advice
  • Direction signs: Show routes, distances, or destinations
  • Regulatory signs: Give mandatory instructions, including prohibitions or limits

Traffic Light Signals

Traffic lights control flow and enhance safety at intersections. Key points:

  • Red: Stop and wait behind the line
  • Amber: Prepare to stop unless unsafe to do so
  • Green: Go when safe; check for pedestrians and other vehicles
  • Flashing signals may indicate caution or lane closure

Road Markings

Road markings guide, warn, and control traffic flow:

  • Lane lines: White or yellow lines to separate lanes or indicate restrictions
  • Stop lines: Solid white line indicating where to stop
  • Zebra crossings: Pedestrian priority markings
  • Directional arrows: Indicate lane usage or turning options

Temporary Signs

Temporary signs provide instructions during roadworks or special events:

  • Often on orange backgrounds to indicate temporary conditions
  • Include diversions, speed limits, or lane closures
  • Follow temporary markings even if permanent signs differ
  • Exercise extra caution in work zones

Local Signs & Lane Control Systems

Local authorities may install additional signs or electronic lane controls:

  • Variable message signs for congestion or hazards
  • Lane signals on motorways and tunnels
  • Local regulations, such as bus or cycle lanes
  • Always comply with these signs; they override general rules when active
