Module 9: Rules of the Road
Understand essential road rules, junctions, speed limits, and lane discipline to drive safely and legally.
Motorway Rules
Motorways have specific rules designed for high-speed safety:
- Keep to the left lane unless overtaking
- Do not stop except in emergencies
- Use indicators for lane changes and exits
- Observe minimum distance gaps for high-speed traffic
Familiarity with these rules reduces risk and ensures smooth traffic flow.
Junctions, Roundabouts & Box Junctions
Navigating junctions safely requires careful observation and planning:
- Always give way according to road signs and markings
- Use mirrors and signal intentions early
- At box junctions, do not enter unless your exit is clear
- Reduce speed and watch for pedestrians and cyclists
Bus Lanes & Cycle Lanes
Respect dedicated lanes to avoid fines and ensure safety:
- Bus lanes are restricted to buses, taxis, cycles, and sometimes motorcycles
- Cycle lanes are reserved for cyclists — avoid driving or stopping there
- Check local restrictions for times when bus lanes are active
- Always give priority to cyclists and pedestrians
Speed Limits
Driving at the correct speed is vital for safety and compliance:
- 30 mph in built-up areas unless otherwise signed
- 60 mph on single carriageways, 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways (unless posted)
- Reduce speed for weather, roadworks, or high pedestrian activity
- Speeding increases collision severity and fines
Lane Discipline
Correct lane usage keeps traffic smooth and prevents collisions:
- Keep to your lane, change lanes safely using mirrors and indicators
- Do not straddle lanes or make sudden lane changes
- Use the correct lane for turning or overtaking
- Observe road markings and lane-specific signs
Pedestrian Crossings
Always prioritise pedestrians and understand crossing types:
- Zebra crossings — stop if someone is waiting or stepping onto the crossing
- Pelican and Puffin crossings — wait for green signal to proceed
- School crossings — reduce speed and be extra vigilant during opening and closing times
- Be alert for pedestrians emerging from between parked cars
