Why Rules Matter

Highway Code knowledge underpins safe, legal driving. Knowing who has priority and what the signs mean helps you make calm, confident decisions.

DVSA Essentials

  • Rule 103–112: Understand signals from police, traffic officers, and authorised persons.
  • Rule 144: You must not drive on the pavement unless crossing to a property entrance.
  • Know national speed limits: cars—30 mph in built-up areas, 60 mph on single carriageways, 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways unless signed otherwise.

Giving and Taking Priority

  • At unmarked crossroads, no one has priority—approach slowly and be prepared to stop.
  • Traffic on the main road normally has priority over vehicles emerging from side roads.
  • Buses, trams, cyclists, and pedestrians may have dedicated priority signals—obey them.

Managing Speed and Signs

Look for clues such as street lighting (usually 30 mph), road markings, and gateway signs when entering new areas. Use repeater signs to confirm the limit and adjust your speed before you reach hazards like bends or pedestrian zones.

Practice Tips

Tip

Sign spotting

During walks or bus rides, note every speed limit or priority sign you see. Quiz yourself on what each means.

Theo’s Advice

Theo’s law log

Keep a single sheet with key Highway Code references (speed limits, stopping requirements). Review it before each lesson.

Tip

Scenario cards

Create flashcards for tricky situations—four-way stops, bus lanes, yellow box junctions. Practise explaining the correct response aloud.
